A Beginner’s Guide to Verilog for VLSI Projects

Verilog can feel intimidating at first because it looks like a programming language but behaves nothing like one — you are describing hardware, not a sequence of instructions.

Start small: implement basic combinational circuits (multiplexers, adders) before attempting sequential logic like counters or FSMs. Simulate every module with a testbench before you ever touch synthesis.

For a first final year VLSI project, a UART transmitter-receiver core or a simple ALU strikes a good balance — substantial enough to be impressive, scoped enough to actually finish and verify properly.
